Jonathan Richman - Boston 1980 *updated links*

jonathan richman, live, boston, 5 all night, tv, soundboard, 1980

Jonathan Richman, live on 5 All Night, Boston, 16th August 1980

This is a rip from a TV appearance Jonathan did in his hometown of Boston, with a rather comical, usually in a cringeworthy sense but at least once in a good way, interview by Matt Siegal. Also, affection is simply fabulous! It's only 20 or so mbs, no reason not to download! :-P

The Smiths - Lyceum Ballroom 1983

the smiths, live, audience, lyceum ballroom, 1983

The Smiths, live at the Lyceum Ballroom London, 25th September 1983

An early show from the Manchester lads, featuring the three early singles and most of the first album (not released until '84), plus These Things Take Time and Wonderful Woman, originally released as 12" b-sides. The show's cut off at the beginning, as the first track starts mid-song, but it's a good sounding recording for its age.

Sigur Ros, live at Laugardalshöllin, Reykjavik, 28th August 1999

An excellent bootleg from Sigur for you, an FM broadcast from what is pretty much, in sporting terms their homeground, Laugardalshöllin. A few of the songs in the setlist weren't released officially for many years, so this is a great one for the collection for that alone.

The Clash - Chicago 1979

the clash, aragon ballroom, chicago, soundboard, live, 1979

The Clash, live at the Aragon Ballroom Chicago, 14th September 1979

A sweet set from the boys from London, though not sure how much Bo plays on this, if at all. Going by the poster for it it could be support or as a guest. Recorded as they were finishing recording London Calling, they include quite a few tracks from that album here, including one much covered song, named here Jimmy Jazz, called Stagger Lee, an old blues standard, my favourite version being by Nick and his Bad Seeds, though it's not for the faint hearted!

Explosions In The Sky. live at the Rescue Rooms, Nottingham England, 2nd September 2004

A sweet sounding bootleg from Explosions today, the Texas based instrumental post-rock band, though they themselves refer to is as just 'rock', and probably rightly so, this is all the same the category they are most affiliated with. They comprise a drummer and three guitarists, for rather a differnt mix to norm, although Michael James sometimes plays bass guitar.

Emiliana Torrini, live on FM France Inter, 13th November 2008

Icelandic half-Italian Emiliana has been around a while now, with most of her albums being released only in her homeland or in the case of Rarities, as a promo only. Sadly, she got fame from singing Gollums Song for LOTR II, rather than her own music, but on the upside it did bring her to the attention of the wider world.

A quality audience recording for it's age, better than some I've heard of much less a vintage. Recorded just after the departure of Peter Gabriel, and featurinf two drummers to replace the excellence of Collins, sadly he doesn't match Gabe for songwriting in my book but then these are still the same songs!

Joan As Police Woman, live at Lido, Berlin, 12th November 2008

Some Miss Wasser today, and a little lovely something from her current European tour. An excellent sound on this audience taped show, you can hear the crowd clearly in the quieter solo piano moments, but it's in no way intrusive, rather it gives you an illusion of being stood near the bar appreciating the show. A nice bit of continuation too, she's still playing with Parker Kindred, ex of Jeff Buckley, and the former Wasser/Kindred/Tighe group Black Beetle. Oh yes, and an unusual cover she's been playing for a while, around three minutes in length in its original incarnation, drawn out (not in an "Oh my god! Isn't this over yet?" way) to about seven by Joan and band.

The Smiths - Salford Uni 1986

The Smiths, live at Salford University, 20th July 1986

A great setlist from what was the The Smiths (sounds weird, but surely the correct way of saying it?) homecoming gig in Salford, home of the famous above location of course. Not the original line-up at this point, as Andy had been fired for his heroin use via post-it note, a classy touch from Morrissey...despite that, this is probably the most celebrated period of The Smiths career as they were touring what's generally considered their best album, certainly my favourite, The Queen Is Dead.

Nouvelle Vague (feat Camille), La Route De Rock, 13th August 2004

Broadcast on Bernard Lenoirs show on FM France Inter, this is French pop act Nouvelle Vague playing on the beach (Camille runs into the sea mid-way through Too Drunk..!). Their name is worthy of an SFA frontman Gruff Rhys song title, as it's pun-tastic. Basically it means New Wave in French, but in Portuguese it means Bossa Nova. As they do (on occasion) play New Wave songs in the Bossa Nova style...

Gods and Monsters - New York 92

gods and monsters, jeff buckley, gary lucas, live, audience, 1992

Gods and Monsters, live at the Roulette Club NYC, 5th April 1992

Post the St. Anns Tim Buckley tribute show, Jeff hooked up with ex-Captain Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas to sing for his band Gods and Monsters. It wasn't a long term affair, but was rather a productive period anyway. They recorded many tracks together at Lucas home studio and played several shows around New York. From these sessions along with Lucas originals, such as How Long Will It Take below, came fledgling versions of Grace and Mojo Pin, which Lucas played guitar for on the album Grace. Thankfully a much more subdued version than during the G&M period!

Rathr a different set from the one I posted a few weeks ago today, probably due to the fact he'd not played Japan for 10 years as he only has a small following there, so sticking to known songs was the the way to go. This does have some Judy Garland thrown in for good measure though.
