Another band I'm shocked I haven't posted yet, Scottish post-rockers Mogwai, named of course, after the lovable creatures in the movie Critters, that, or the original Chinese demons.

Recorded during promotion for their third LP Rock Action, though only one third of the set is made up of those tracks, they've since released another three studio albums. Sadly the opening track is cut short, on the upside it is a soundboard sourced show.

Fugazi have been around since 1988, currently on hiatus, and they rock. They have a very cool attitude to the business of music, sticking to their indie label when majors came-a-courting, as they felt they were selling enough albums without having money to promote them, and also treat their fans with great respect. They've always tried to keep tickets prices at a reasonable cost, $5 in the US, and have a no 'slam-dance' policy, a relic from the punk/hardcore days, 'cos these people just get in the way of an enjoyable gig.

Téléphone, were a four piece French rock band, with an early spot for what is now an almost obligitary female bass player in Corine Marienneau. I think the only other ones who existed at this time were Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads), Suzi Quattro, and Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth).

They existed for ten years, 1976 to 1986, and released five studio albums, with this performance falling between the fourth and fith, Au Cœur De La Nuit (In The Heart of the Night) and Dure Limite (Hard Limit). With a traditional rock & roll sound with a little punk thrown in for good measure (punk was little more than r&r stripped back anyway), they were rather famous at the end of the '70's, gaining themselves a support slot on a Rolling Stones world tour. Not too shabby at all.

This bootleg does have a bit of hiss and warble here and there, as it's from an old cassette of course, which at times is a bit annoying but far from unlistenable (I wouldn't post it if it was!).

Originally signed to Welsh indie label Ankst, a rather legendary label around these parts having helped out great Welsh acts such as Cerys Matthews, Gorkis Zygotic Mynci, Llwybr Llaethog and Los Campesinos! (The exclamation is part of their name, not over exhuberance on my part), SFA reached the masses when signed to the fledgling (and now defunct, unlike Ankst) Creation Records, before setting up their own label Placid Casual, a title often used in various forms by the boyos, though they now release their records via Rough Trade I guess they lack the organisation to release albums worldwide, but they sure manage to knock out the albums, twelve in twelve years.

Matisyahu - Denver 2008

Matisyahu isn't your usual rapper, what with the tell-tale Jewish garb, skull-cap, curly locks and all. What he is though, is very damned good. With a great band delivering reggae style music, and excellent guests (Komakozie and Trevor Hall), Matisyahu delivers his often religious inspired tracks beautifully. His debut album Youth scored a fair hit amongst those who knew about it, and I'm sure he'll grow ever larger in popularity.

Joseph Arthur, live from Studio 104 (Canal+), St-Denis France, 7th October 2008

Joseph was signed to Peter Gabriels label Real World after a copy of his demo EP landed on his table, and after he was invited to perform an audition type gig at NYCs Fez club.

Joseph takes onboard the relevances of todays technologies and fan demands, and as such his shows are recorded and sold post-gig to fans via CDRs, though I'm not sure that would be the case with this performance, as it was a TV/Radio session, and as such not his sound engineer and what have you. He's released alot of material too this year, the album Temporary People plus a host of EPs.

Sonic Youth - Noise Festival 1981

The first ever gig Sonic Youth played, though they were at this point called the Arcadians, Lee Raynaldo joined after seeing this show and came up with the name, as seen above he played solo. The actual line-up was: Thurston Moore on guitar and vocals, Kim Gordon, bass and vocals, Ann DeMarinis, keyboards and vocals, and Richard Edson on drums. It seems as if the songs they played at this first gig were never given names, at least none anyone outside of the band seems to know...
