The Who, live at the Pavillion, Paris, 17th May 1979

A little FM sourced show for you today, from the legendary The Who. The show is interspersed with a French radio host, announcing song titles in a peculiar, yet amusing French way, and to be fair the set is a bit hit-and-miss, some great songs, some not so great, some great performances, some not so great.

Indochine - Montpellier 1986

indochine, live, montpellier, audience, 1986

Indochine, live at Le Zenith, Montpellier France, 7th March 1986

Back in 1985, Frendch new wave/rock band Indochine released their third album, snappily titled 3 (perhaps Led Zep of Big Star should sue?), which gave them the public acclaim to match their critical acclaim. A little help from Serge Gainsbourg in making a video helped I'm sure. The final track apart, the complete album is reproduced here. I'm sure you'll enjoy.

Manic Street Preachers - Southend 1993

manic street preachers, live, audience, southend cliffs pavillion, 1993

Manic Street Preachers, live at the Southend Cliffs Pavillion, 7th July 1993

With Richie Edwards on 'silent guitar', the Manics made alot of noise in the early ninties, sadly only rarely living up to what they said they would be. A year after this show they were recording their masterpiece The Holy Bible, apart from the mammoth sales promised by the band for their debut, this album did actually live up to all hyperbole they spoke of themselves. Thankfully for todays post, they had actually recorded a good few excellent rock tunes prior to '94's must have album, most of which are in this set. Enjoy!

The La's - Amsterdam 1991

the la's, live, soundboard, the melkweg, amsterdam, 1991

The La's, live at the Melkweg, Amsterdam, 19th April 1991

I've not seen alot of La's soundboard shows floating about, in fact only this one, but then I don't obsessively track them down. Obviously, as there was only one album, great though it may be, they could only do so long a concert without repeating themselves, hence we get three songs repeated here. Hey, if it's good enough for The Smiths, then Lee and Co. can do it too. Enjoy!

Gutter Twins, live at Union Chapel, London, 19th January 2009

A little more Lanegan for you today, this time singing (mostly) his own material. A rather tasty acoustic set it is too, with Dave Rosser providing additional tasteful guitar and backing vocals, and a slightly altered classic in I Get A Kick Out Of You providing something of a smiley closer. Enjoy!

Richard Hawley - Centralstation 2003

richard hawley, live, audience, centralstation, darmstadt, 2003

Richard Hawley, live at Darmstadt, Centralstation, 9th May 2003

I was quite surprised to find this recording, as Richard was little known as a solo artists at this point, especially coming from a German venue, but then he was the support slot, something more tapers should consider when heading to a gig.

Taking the above into account, the crowd is understandably rather nonchalant, chatting more than listening really, and the applaud quietly but appreciatively to a set which is probably aided by the muted audience, at least for us bootleg listeners! Enjoy!

Grinderman - Denmark 2008

grinderman, nick cave, live, fm, roskilde, 2008

Grinderman, live at Roskilde, Denmark, 7th April 2008

After a few albums from The Bad Seeds where piano balladry was very prominent, Nick decided that what was needed was a bit of raw rock punch to enliven the band again. So he called on the core members to write some new material with him, simply go to the studio, play loud and fast, then hit record. The album was sweet, and the following Bad Seeds albums followed a similar vein. Enjoy!

The Sonics - London 2008

the sonics, live, audience, 2008, kentish forum, london

The Sonics, live at The Kentish Forum, London, March 21st 2008

The first time I heard The Sonics was a few years ago now, I got a compilation CD from Mojo magazine full of raw garage rock, the original kind, not The White Stripes and The Strokes variety. One of the most stand-out tracks was called Psycho, a three-chord (plus key change) raucous number about a woman who's rather a tease, with what is one of my favourite rock screams ever at the end of each verse. So I was rather glad to find this little bootleg recently, just a shame it's not from when they were doing it years back. Oh yes, if you're in the UK you'll more than likely have heard Have Love Will Travel on an advert at some point, though not The Sonics version. Enjoy!

A Tribe Called Quest - Hollywood 1990

a tribe called quest, live, audience, 1990

A Tribe Called Quest, live at The Palace, Hollywood, 20th April 1990

Something of a rarity today, as although I have a love for Hip-Hop, I rarely find any bootlegs of artists I like, and even more rarely post them here (I think this may be the first?). Anyway, A Tribe were formed in 1988, and since have placed themselves towards the upper echelons of Hip-Hop history with classis such as Can I Kick It and I Left My Wallet...with their use of jazzy lines becoming a great base for their sound. I'm sure you'll enjoy this!

Franz Ferdinand, Session Prive SFR, live from Oui FM, 3rd February 2009

A good mix (about 50/50) of old and new in this 'private session', from those Scots named after the dude who died so that Hitler could eventually blow himself away. Yay for history! The latest album by FF is a good departure from their sound, keeping enough of what made them loved in the first place, and adding some keys and synths to fatten it out a bit. Good stuff. Enjoy the show!

Vetiver - Detroit 2008

vetiver, live, audience, the fillmore, detroit, 2008

Vetiver, live at The Fillmore Detroit, 6th December 2008

Andy Cabic, was playing guitar for Devendra Banhart before going off on his own to form Vetiver. Signing to indie labels Subpop and Fat Cat, two of my favourite labals in the world, they released three albums to date. Now on Bella Union in Europe, they release Tight Knit, from which most of these tracks are taken, on the 17th February (pre-order from Subpop). If you think Devendra is a bit too quirky, then don't be put off by these guys, there's a common thread between them, but Andy's music is much more easily accessable. Anyway, enjoy!
