My Bloody Valentine - Live At The Apollo 2008

my bloody valentine, apollo, manchester, live, 2008

My Bloody Valentine, live at the Apollo Manchester, 29th June 2008

Something good to look forward to...

It has been 17 years since the release of Loveless, My Bloody Valentine's legendary album, which cost £250,000 to record, bringing Creation Records close to bankruptcy. "It was," Shields said this weekend, "a very, very damaged time for everybody."

My Bloody Valentine then signed to Island Records and Shields spent years in isolation, working in the studio until in 1997 Island finally cut him off, upset at the lack of progress. "That was it," Shields explained. "It was like the plug was pulled, 'No money for you anymore.'"

Revenue from the recent gigs have allowed the band to buy some £200,000 in equipment, and though the revitalised group has not yet been performing new songs, Shields seems enthusiastic for the future. He's not worried, either, that his outlook has improved from the "loveless" days of the early 90s.

"I definitely don't think you need to suffer to be creative," he insisted. "I've written some of my best songs when I've been happy."

The Breeders - Live in St Pere 2008

breeders, live, soundboard, fm, 2008

The Breeders, live at La Route Du Rock, St. Pere France, 14th August 2008

The Deal twins re-emerged this year also, to much less fanfare than The Pixies of course, yet they had a much bigger hit with Cannonball than anything Kims day job ever produced. Initialy The Breeders was concieved to be a band with Tanya Donelly, the lovely singer of 'grunge' acts Belly and Throwing Muses, sadly that never came to be and Kim Deal used the name anyway, she must have rather liked it. Shame about the Tanya thing though, but then she probably had better albums than Kims band ever did...anyway, this was an FM broadcast from September 2nd on FM France Inter. Enjoy!

Jeff Buckley, live at Sudbahnhof France, 24th February 1995

On the 24th February 1995, Jeff and the band performed for a French TV show, and the bootleg of this is fairly widely available, but sadly it cuts out due to the program running time during Grace. This however, is the full show, as the tapes were left running after the show left air, and boy am I glad it's available, as the version of Lilac Wine here is one of my absolute favourites, and to have it, and the entire show, in such quality is sweet.

Jane's Addiction, live at the Theatre Of Living Arts, Philadelphia, 20th February 1989

A nice soundboard set from the ever-so-slightly mental (in a good way, naturally) Perry, Dave, Eric and Stephen. Apparantly, and Wikipedia says it so it must be true, their name came from a roomate of Perry Farrells, Jane Bainter, who was an addict. That's one way to show some love I s'pose... Jeff Buckley, live at the London Astoria, January 18th 1995

Another rarity for you today, something I've only recently got in its full form, though I have seen some tracks floating around. Another source perhaps?

I was talking to another big Jeff fan about the emergence of the KROQ show the other week and she gave me the link to this, telling me that she knows the taper and would have a word in his shell-like about the master cassette. Sadly, when these MP3s were ripped from the original copy, which was heavily damaged, the master was killed. Shame the owners tech savvy friend didn't have the forethought (foresight?) to rip it straight to lossless in the first place. I know that's what any serious bootlegger would've done...C'est La Vie as the Belgians and Swiss might say.

Regina Spektor - Live at Cabaret Voltaire 2006

regina spektor, live, cabaret voltaire, edinburgh, 2006

Regina Spektor, live at the Cabaret Voltaire Edinburgh, 1st February 2006

I've got a little bit of a fetish for the solo singer-songwriter, preferably a little fun and quirky, and Miss Spektor is just one of those, and she's pretty to boot. As many artists here seem to be, Regina hails from NYC...well, at least that's where her musical career has been based anyway, she actually has a Russian-Jewish background.

Her first self-released album was called 11:11, the same title as a song by fellow NYC-based pianist, and-just-about-everything-I-listed-Regina-as-being-except-a-man, Rufus Wainwright. Suprisingly though, Miss Spektor hasn't really recorded with the many well known artists of the New York scene, other than The Strokes (a couple of their B-sides), their guitarist Nick Valenci appearing on Better from her Shortlist Music Prize nominated Begin To Hope album of 2006.

Sigur Ros - Montreal Jazz 2001

sigur ros, live, montreal jazz festival, 2001, soundboard

Sigur Ros, live at the Montreal Jazz Festival, 13th July 2001

Jón Þór, Kjartan, Georg and Orri Páll, not quite as catchy as John, Paul, George and Ringo, and to be fair, their music isn't either. What would also be fair though, would be to say that these young men are as inventive as the Scousers were at their peak (we all agree the early work of The Beatles was mostly weak, right?).

Sadly, due to wank movies starring even wankier mental midget millionaire actors, they're probably the swanky middle-England middle-class dinner party soundtrack, a noughties version of Enya. A hideous thought I know, but true none-the-less. Thankfully, although they do have that etheral atmospheric quality to their music, it lacks the utter barminess and shittness of Enya.

Richard Hawley was shafted when the Arctic Monkeys debut album beat Coles Corner to win the Mercury Music Prize, as they themselves said, not least because the award was meant to promote lesser known artists, but as most of us now it's now just an industry backslapping exercise. Anyway, it was still a great album, and did well enough under the labels own pushing without the extra it sold due to the award, Here's the demos from the young men, featuring many an unreleased track to boot (all in better quality than the fansite too!)

Next in the Jeff Buckley musical family tree is Big Star (Kanga-Roo) frontman Alex Chilton, with a rather lovely solo (almost anyway, someone plays tambs and sings b-vox) radio performance. If you don't already know, are not aware of the band, or are just too dense to realise, the alt-folk band Death Cab For Cutie are named after the Big Star song featured in this set. Elbow are simply one of the best live bands I've seen, how so few guys get such a big sound is rather astonishing. Considering these guys are from Manchester, a city with a history of bands with a certain sound, or at least bands who don't stray too far from that sound, it's very refreshing that they exist at all, and goes to show that not all Mancs are stuck with major, minor and seventh chords only, they even know alternate tunings for fuck sake!

Oh yes, they're also up for this years Mercury Music Prize with The Seldom Seen Kid album, joint second favourites with Radiohead according to William Hill bookmakers (Burial with Untrue is 4/6 favourite at the time of posting), and rightly deserved a nomination it is too.

Eddie Vedder, various live sessions, and 1998 demos

What can I say about Eddie...I don't know really as it's been a long day, I've started drinking, and my brain isn't exactly up to the task. I once had a couple of lads over for what we might aswell call an audition many moons ago, it went ok and they were good lads, but it wasn't meant to be...anyway, I had to go into town afterwards so they gave me a lift in and on the stereo was Pearl Jams Jeremy. So, I sat in the back giving it the whole "Ooh woah oh oh..." bit at the end, and they in turn give it the "Whoa, damn dude, do that again!" Whatever did happen to my voice...ah yes, too much smoking that's right.

So we have for you today, a tape bought off Eds neighbour, some soundboard from the world famous Carnegie Hall (sweet cover!), an impromptu couple of songs before a Sleater Kinney show (one with vocalist Janet Weiss), a mixing desk feed plus soundcheck featuring students from the Paul Green School Of Rock Music, and finally another soundboard recording, this time with Mike McCready along for the ride and a special couple of guests for one track, which I'll let you find out for yourself...I will say the vocalist and bassist of a very big group though. :-P

Antony And The Johnsons - Live in Catania 2005

antony, and the johnsons, live, catania, mercati generali

Antony And The Johnsons, live at Mercati Generali Italy, 8th May 2005

Another product of the NY scene today, and as such, has many links (three at least...) with Jeff Buckley. Be My Husband, the Nina Simone song is/was played by both, Joan Wasser plays in the studio for Antony (as well as Antony contributing vocals for her), and his drummer is Parker Kindred, ex of Jeffs band. Anyway, if Lou Reed loves him, so should you!

Cat Power - Live at Black Cat 1996

cat power, live, concert, black cat, washington, 1996

Cat Power, live at the Black Cat Washington, 18th September 1996

To those who've come to Cat (Charlyn "Chan" Marshall)Powers music in recent years and aren't completely obsessed by her lovely music, me included, it may come as a surprise to know she's been around quite so long. Then again, those who know what an SOB the industry can be, me included, it comes as less of one. As per usual, John Peel was there fairly early, although after Cat had given up on making it on the New York scene, yet she didn't get much joy over here till another person with a constant finger on the pulse Patti Smith, who more than likely saw Cat in her early '90's days in New York anyway, when she included her in the Meltdown Fest line-up of 2005.

I saw her on the now pretty shitty, though it still has it's moments I suppose, Later with Jules Holland, not too long back, where herself and (Leslie) Feist both sang songs of black origin, literally for Feist, stylisticaly for Cat, and both blew away UK soul singer Beverley Knight in my humble opinion, and I do love a good strong black womans voice. Anyway....here you go folks!

Jeff Buckley - Live at the Meltdown Festival 1995

jeff buckley, meltdown festival, didos lament, live, concert

Jeff Buckley, live at the Meltdown Festival, 1st July 1995

A few years ago now, I came by the lossless version of this show, after having such a shitty version of it on MP3 for so, so long, as all Buckley fans did too. I took it to DAD (bootleggers know where I mean) after a while to share with the kind Jeffies there, and was a little shocked at the reaction. Alot of people seemed to think that it was fake, that it simply didn't exist, and that it must've been MP3 sourced. After the most precursory of listens (and much technical analysis), it was decided that this source was genuine and ten times better sounding. It has been shared on every decent and every shitty tracker since! So, a big thank you to me I think...;-) I still love the curator Elvis Costellos crowd chat to this day.
