john cale - new york 78

john cale, live, audience, cbgbs, new york, 1978

John Cale, live at CBGB's, New York, 27th December 1978

I've posted a couple of gigs from the CBGB's club over the past couple of weeks, and here's another nice one to add to that run, multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/Welshman John Cale, founder member of The Velvet Underground. This show was recorded during probably his most loved recording period, and although Helen of Troy was released by Island Records without his consent, they were what he called demos at that point, it's still highly regarded in his large catalogue. A couple of great covers too, his dark rendition of Heartbreak Hotel, and a version of Pablo Picasso (The Modern Lovers) which he produced in it's original form. Enjoy!

Jeff Buckley - New York 1993

jeff buckley, live, forget her, audience, cbgbs, new york, 1993

Jeff Buckley, live at CBGB's, New York, 18th December 1993

Another installment of Buckley for you today, from the famous, and now defunct a'la Sin-E, CBGB's club in New York. This show is okay sounding, a little 'hot' in places, and Jeff isn't quite on it for all the tracks, but that aside it is a very good show, and stands out amongst the plethora of them out there due to the fact that this contains the only known version of Forget Her to have been taped at the bands shows, plus the lesser played CCC also. Enjoy!

A little more of Scots post-rockers Mogwai for you today, taken from their Mr. Beast tour, perhaps their most successful album to date. Only four tracks are actually taken from Mr. Beast though, so perhaps they'd not toured down under for a while? Hence the more 'best of' feel of the setlist. Anyway, please do enjoy!

Linkbucks is the devils whore

Whoever is being led here through a linkbucks portal, please let me know where the links are posted. Linkbucks pay that person for my posts of music I share with you freely and I reckon it sucks donkey balls. I don't get paid for it, the artists don't, so why should someone who copies my feed get paid?

Probably fuck all I can do but have a word with this person and try to see if they have some morals. I'm counting on nothing.

Sigur Rós - New York 2008

Sigur Rós, sigur ros, live, soundboard, web video rip, moma, museum of modern arts, 2008

Sigur Rós, live at MoMa, New York, 7th July 2008

MoMa is the Museum of Modern Arts, not in anyway a music venue, yet the sound of this show is fantastic. It's taken from a webrip of a video (from current.tv), WAV extracted, then converted to MP3, so maybe something of a transcode but fuck it.

The band played on Icelands Idependence Day, hence the national anthem, apart from that...it's a really great set, mixing classic Ros with some great tracks from the new album. On a site I took a look at in readying these files it said that Ný batterí is in the setlist (between Sé Lest and Við Spilum Endalaust). I didn't take the time to listen to every second of the show, so can't say that it definitely isn't, but I never heard any exerpts during my encoding process. Anyway...enjoy!

Elliott Smith, live at Umbra Penumbra, Portland, Oregon, 17th September 1994

Apparantly this is the earliest known of Elliott Smith recordings, and it appears to be so too going by the etree database. It's fairly well circulated, and for good reason. It's got a great sound, and it's a tidy little solo show indeed. Enjoy!

Death Cab For Cutie, live at the Viking Hall Main Lounge, Bellingham W.A., 110th April 1999

When Ben Gibbard released a side project cassette You Can Play These Songs With Chords, the surprising success of this led him to form a band with guitarist Chris Walla who played on said cassette. They released another album, an actual real one this time, in 1998, and this show is from between that release, Something About Airplanes, and the third We Have Facts And We're Voting Yes. This show was also played in their hometown and contains songs from each of these releases, I'm sure you'll enjoy!

Kristin Hersh, 4AD Presents The 13 Year Itch, live at the I.C.A. London, 19th July 1993

Kristin has been playing music for, about 100 years...*coughs*, however long it is she's always been very cool. Her breakthrough was with band Throwing Muses in the late eighties and early ninties, and although she's got a handsome solo career, they've never really gone away, releasing their last album in 2003. This concert was one of many put on by label 4AD to showcase the many talented artists on it's roster (Belly, Red House Painters, Dead Can Dance, The Breeders), releasing a compilation of those same artists and selling them at the gigs only. This was the first of those shows, enjoy!

Martha Wainwright - Manchester 2005

martha wainwright, live, audience, manchester, acadamy 3, 2005

Martha Wainwright, live at Acadamy 3, Manchester University, 8th May 2005

Martha, sister of the flambouyant Rufufs, and daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, follows a more traditional route than her erstwhile sibling, sticking to a more folk based autobiographical music, no duobt influenced by her parents, Bloody Motherfuckin' Asshole, a song aimed at her father, is a fine example of this, and a really fine song too.

This show, performed on Martha's 29th birthday, was in support of her recently released self titled debut album. That said, she did release Ground Floor previous to this, but it was a limited run produced by herself (I think) and sold at her earliest shows. Anyway, this is a great set, a nice mix of the albumcovers, and older songs that I'm sure you'll enjoy.

Ugly Casanova, live at the Blackbird Theater, Portland Oregon, 19th November 2001

Ugly Casanova are little known, though I'm sure many of you will know of their singer Isaac Brock's day job, the frontman for Modest Mouse. They released just one album on Sub Pop records, and though they have toured quite a bit (at the time of release and a few years later) there seems to be few bootlegs kicking about. Neko Case - Los Angeles 2000

neko case, live, audience, spaceland, los abgeles, 2000

Neko Case, live at Spaceland, Los Angeles, 10th March 2000

Neko made her name when she sang several songs on the New Pornographers album Mass Romantic before going solo, firstly with her band Her Boyfriends, before perhaps gaining a little more confidence and continuing comeletely under her own name. Though the Pornographers were an indie-pop style group, formed more to allow each member to gain a little from playing with each other more than anything, her own music is much more country than anything else. 2006 brought us her album Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, and with it many, many plaudits for her songwriting style. Anyway...this is rather younger than that as you've noticed, though I'm sure you'll enjoy it anyway.
