Joy Division - Live in Eindhoven 1980

joy division, live, eindhoven, 1980

Joy Division, Effenaar Eindhoven, 18th January 1980

This is apparantly a soundboard source, and I'd go along with it, though it is a tad untidy, as audience recordings from the time are likely to be half this good if you're lucky! Sadly this bootleg (from a siver CD source) is missing a couple of tracks; Disorder should slot in at number eight, and Warsaw ended the set. I'm sure with some searching the full set could be found, as there are alot of different releases containing it, but for now here's what I have for you.

A WFMU broadcast of Jeff for you today, and as such it's a bit staticy, but thankfully not so much as it disturbs your listening pleasure once a song is in full flow. Good setlist too, the usual stuff, plus a little Corpus Christi, Lost Highway and a joke cover for good measure.

Juliana Hatfield, live at Bush Hall London, 9th March 2006

Here's a nice show for you, from the lovely Juliana Hatfield. She formed Blake Babies as a teen and released a few albums with them before going solo when they split. Since then she's had many solo albums, and a little success to go with them, and has worked with alot of different artists, Evan Danado (The Lemoneheads, she played bass on their biggest album), Belly, Aimee Mann, and recorded two albums with the Some Girls trio (with Heidi Gluck and Freda Love Smith) in the process too. With her love of both punk and pop music, which she combines excellently, she really should earn more plaudits than she gets.

Sonic Youth - Live at TeatroTenda Strisce 1992

sonic youth, rome, soundboard, dirty

Sonic Youth, live at Teatro Tenda Strisce, Rome, 26th November 1992

This show is taken from the period when alternative rock music was really taking the world by storm, and to those who knew what the 'genre' was all about, rather than just following the journalists lead, knew that Sonic Youth, who at this point had been around for around ten years already (the debut Confusion Is Sex was released 1983), were the real deal.

1992 saw the release of Dirty, the acclaimed follow-up to the equally acclaimed Goo (1990), and as such the tracks from both albums feature heavily in what is a really fantastic soundboard sourced set. I've got a bit of a stash of SBD Youth, and for some reason it's taken me this long to upload anything from them. Rest assured a few more will be posted in the coming weeks.

Big Star - What's Goin' Ahn

big star, studio, outtakes, whats goin ahn

Big Star, What's Goin Ahn, Studio Outtakes '72-'73

Big Star is the band of the wonderful songwriter Alex Chilton, though it was formed by previous singer/songwriter Chris Bell who left during the recording of the 2nd album, Alex took the lead and has reformed the group recently. They're considered one of the first practitioners of what is now called Indie music, having such bands as Teenage Fanclub and R.E.M. professing them as a major influence over their music. They released three albums in the 1970s, the last being '78's Third/Sister Lovers, and were said to have taken a cue from the British Invasion acts of the '60's (Beatles/Who/Kinks), but personally I can't really see the Beatles influence.

These outtakes were taken from the sessions for the albums #1 Record and Radio City, and the shelved songs are better than alot of peoples actual output in my opinion.

Chris Cornell - Live at Kesslehaus 2007

chris cornell, berlin, 2007, live, bootleg, full band

Chris Cornell, live at Kesslehaus, Berlin 20th May 2007

Chris is surely in the top 10 rock singers alive today, even if when I saw him a few years back now I was a little dissapointed by his performance, but then he can't be expected to wail night after night as well as he did when he was in his early twenties.

I think he should really get himself a top band together now and stick with the solo career. I loved Soundgarden, and I loved RATM at their peak, but Audioslave was a bit of an anti climax overall. The first album was excellent, very refreshing to hear such a tight band with a great singer at the helm, but the latter releases failed to insoire quite as much, and as such I think the split was just about timed right. Fingers crossed that Chris can now find himself a really hot band that will contribute to the songwriting process and he can keep adding to his impressive back catalogue.

Dave Grohl - Solo Demo 1990

dave grohl, solo demo, bootleg, foo fighters

Dave Grohl, Solo Demo recording, Laundry Room Studio, Arlington 1990

In 1990, Daves band Scream split after losing their bass player, after a chat with Buzz Osbourne of The Melvins he was told that Nirvana were seeking a new drummer...the rest as they say, is history.

When this demo waas recorded during that period, I couldn't really say, but what I can say is this...it's pretty damn ace. Both Hells Garden and Friend Of A Friend are rather Nirvanaesque in structure and Daves vocals (two-chord changes, loud/quite dynamic), no bad thing. Just Another Story is a nice slice of punk, akin to something The Circle Jerks might've released, which Dave does in a rather fetching spoken word style.

Download both individual and archived files, as I'll be just containing the rest in them from now on. People don't have duplicates, saves my upload time etc.

Led Zeppelin - Brutal Artistry

led zeppelin, physical graffiti, outtakes, brutal artistry, bootleg

Led Zeppelin, Brutal Artistry, Physical Graffiti outtakes 1974

Along with Sabbath and AC/DC, Zep are the very, very best of classic rock bands (Stones and Beatles are exempt from that 'genre' surely?), and as such, pretty obviously, are amongst my alltime favourite bands. The double album Physical Graffiti, the album that gave Puffy his Come With Me single from the Godzilla soundtrack, is amongst the very best of Led Zeppelins output in my opinion, only the criminally underrated III competes with it for top spot on a regular basis.

These Headley Grange recordings are rather bloody good, although missing a Night Flight and/or Bron-Y-Aur alt/demo/instrumental sadly, and go to show how much work the guys put into their releases. Most notably on the second disc, where Jimmy Pages instrumental demo of Swan Song is so long due to his experimentation, that it's the only track on the disc! In The Light makes a couple of different appearances too, as both In The Morning and Take Me Home.

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down Outtakes

genesis, lamb lies, down on broadway, soundboard, demos, outtakes

Genesis, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Demos

The last Genesis album with Peter Gabriel was a 4-sided, that's 2CD to the laymen, concept album based around a character called Rael who goes to New York in search of his lost brother. It's said that the albums character has split-personality, and as such is searching for themselves, and as Gabriel took the name from his own, dressed up as characters onstage, and soon left the band, we can assume that it's semi-autobiographical in a sense.

I've never really been into Prog, but the album is immense, and of course is another Buckley link...

On the last date of the Australian leg of the tour, Jeff and band played a couple of songs never before, and never again, on stage, the Mick Grondahl sung Edna Frau, and the song Jeff penned with his then lover Elizabeth Fraser. It's weird that before they met they were both huge fans of each other, and the fact that the Cocteau Twins (Frasers band) covered one of the Tim Buckleys songs, Song To The Siren, and very much in the way Jeff did with Cohens Hallelujah, made it their own.

I don't think many people would read a write-up on RATM even if it was my most eloquent and witty one yet, so I shan't bother. I will say this though...Zack stopped the show several times as the crowd were going a bit mental and folk were getting rather crushed near the front of the stage, causing the security to come on and confer with the band at one point. Elliott Smith - Live at the Terrace Club 1997

elliott smith, terrace club, live, soundboard

Elliott Smith, Terrace Club Princeton University, 12th April 1997

Elliott wrote alot about his demons and what they drove him to, primarily depression, drugs and drink. It is these that were thought to have led him to commit suicide in 2003, though the evidence of his apparent suicide were inconclusive, and many fans thought perhaps it wasn't suicide due to him dying of two stab wounds to the chest. If it was, then he was pretty damned determined to do it that's for sure!

This performance is taken from his tour in support of his third release Either/Or, though the songs he played were taken from across his albums to this point. The show includes two covers; one he'd recorded during the either/or sessions, yet didn't release (though it did see the light of day on a couple of soundtracks), Big Stars song Thirteen, and Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks.

Jason's the leader of the Magnolia Electric Co., an alt/country band hailing from Ohio. This solo show is taken from the period between (or there abouts, the official name change date is hazy) his Ohia project, himself and a revolving band, and the official formation of MECo.

About half the tracks here are basically him working out the songs in a live setting, they were to become the basis of Nashville Moon and What Comes After The Blues, both recorded in 2005. Also, as far as my shallow research can tell me, the song With Blue Eyes Without Me is unreleased.

British Sea Power - Live at Whelans 2008

british sea power, live, bootleg, dublin, mp3

British Sea Power, Whelans, Dublin, Jan 18th 2008

British Sea Power made their name in an odd manner for a UK band really, as it's not very often we get groups doing the whole residency thing...having a weekly slot at a venue, yet this is what they did. Brighton was the town of choice, being the entertainment (and gay, though I'm sure this had no bearing) capitol of southern England. Well, outside of London anyway.

It payed off, and with each release their popularity has grown. Not suprisingly really, as they're one of the most accomplished bands about in the UK today, and aren't in the bracket of those who got signed post-Doherty. A phenomenon I hate as a music fan...a band's good and sells records, anything vaguely simliar gets signed to try and cash in on a trend. BSPs music thankfully did its own talking, nothing to do with style in anyway, the way all music should be.

Another Buckley connection for you (Joan in the previous post was his ex), for both the snippet late on in the set, and the fact that Glen was a friend of Jeffs.

The Frames have been around since 1990, yet they didn't get very much love outside Ireland until singer Glen Hassard played the guitarist Outspan "Fender Bender" Foster in the movie The Commitments in 2003. In 2007 he got back into movies, starring in ex-bass player John Carneys Once, playing a role he did at 13 in Dublin (in real life) as a busker, and consequently won an award (Oscar?) for original song as he wrote the soundtrack, which he performed with his co-star, some woman with an eastern European name I don't recall.

Joan As Police Woman - Radio 6 Session

Joan As Police Woman, live session for BBC Radio 6, 2006

Another rather kookie lady today, and a rather fine one at that. Joan has been in and around the NY scene for many years now, and aswell as the session work for the likes of Rufus Wainwright, Elton John, and Anthony (& the Johnsons) Heggarty (I'm pretty sure she's not a faghag), she's been in a few less than successful bands, Black Beetle (with former Jeff Buckley band members) and The Dambuilders.

I once saw her perform with, and as support for, Rufus Wainwright, and althought there were alot of songs about dead rockers she was very impressive. As it was a Friday 13th, she said that she'd been thinking of ways to freak people out during the show and uttered "We're all going to die alone", at which point I threw my arms into the air and proclaimed "Woo!". Although she never saw me she did exactly the same and laughed. It gave me a warm feeling in my belly, not the same place I usually get a warm feeling when thinking of Joan mind.

PJ Harvey - Live at the Southside Festival 2004

pj harvey, southside festival, live, bootleg, 2004

PJ Harvey, live at the Southside Festival, Neuhausen, June 27th 2004

I'm not quite sure what to say about Polly Jean Harvey, as she's rather an enigma, rather dark and shit, but with a very acidic humourous edge. She's been around since the very early '90's, and was adored by Thom Yorke in both their early days. With ten full length releases to her name, a collaboration album and having worked with Nick Cave, QOTSA, Mark Lanegan, Marianne Faithful and even Bristolian trip-hop leading light Tricky, there's many a style and topic been covered by this prodigious talent.

Stone Roses - Live at De Montfort Uni

stone roses, de montfort university, soundboard, bootleg

Stone Roses, De Montfort University, Leicester, 7th December 1995

Adored for their debut self titled album while the Second Coming, delayed by their fight to be released from the contract with Silvertone, should really get more love than it does. Yes, it's Johns album in a sense, and yes he does play alot of lead guitar throughout, but sadly some who loved the poppier feel of the debut thought that it was rather overblown. That was the direction the Stone Roses were always going to take. Their very first songs had little soloing in them, and as they progressed into the band who took over, well at least the UK, they came out with songs like I Am The Resurrection and Fools Gold, both monumental songs, yet no one said they were excessive. Such is the fickle world of fame...Anyway, here's an excellent soundboard gig from the latter period, without Reni on drums, with Robbie Maddix and session keyboard player Nigel Ipinson.

Jeff Buckley - Live at The Black Cat

jeff buckley, solo, live, black cat, washington, 1994

Jeff Buckley, live solo at the Black Cat Washington, 22nd Feb 1994

I've always loved this Buckley performance, and for ages wondered who it was that sang on the last track, one of Jeffs many Van Morrison Astral Weeks covers, the oft played Sweet Thing. I asked at the JBB (Jeff Buckley Board), and was answered by the outspoken, no nonsense, Clarefromscotland, who told me that it was a young student/musician/journo Jamie Blake.

Unbeknownst to me, Clare, who runs a Cornell page and has done her fair bit of journalism too, had actually asked Jamie herself for her story about meeting Jeff and how she came to sing with him. Here follows the email she wrote back.

"I was a college student at the time at American University in D.C. I was also the music editor of a paper there called the University Reporter that went to 60,000 school kids in the area. I had an especially good relationship with a local rep from Sony. They were really pushing me to do an article on Jeff. They sent me "live at sine," and at first I didnt get it, but agreed to meet him at a dinner before the Black Cat show at Dantes. As it turned out one of my college professors at school was his opening act, a solo artist named Mark Helm. He was mentoring my songwriting. The two of them met at soundcheck that night, and Mark must have told Jeff about me. The dinner at Dantes was for local press, all women. The label was working his beauty factor. He really was beautiful. I was sitting at the opposite end of the table from Jeff. The table was long with about 15 women around it. I hadn't said a word, everyone was rifling questions at him. I was drifting into space when he calls out, "who here is the musician?" I said nothing, thinking of course he doesn't mean me. He then said again, holding a glass of red wine, "who here is a musician," I think I raised my hand, and managed a squeaky "me." With that he made the women next to him move out of the way and called me to sit next to him. Everyone was still there, but for the rest of the night we only spoke with each other. He had an amazing ability to make you feel special, like the only one in the room. At some point I realized my friend was going on the stage soon, so I got up to leave, and Jeff said he wanted to come too. We left everyone behind, and walked to the venue together. It was probably only a two block walk, and I remember every word of the conversation. He was telling me about how he got signed, talking about his skull and bones necklace, about great music in general, continuing our conversation from the restaurant. He asked me if I would come on stage later and sing with him. I had a very limited musical education at the time, and we couldn't find a song we knew in common. Sooooo, he said you're going to sing "sweet thing" with me, and just wing it. Repeat after me or something. So I sat to watch Mark perform, Jeff thought he was brilliant, I remember him paying close attention to the lyrics, and commenting on them. Mark is an amazing lyricist, they actually ran into each other later, overseas, and Jeff was wonderful to him. Jeff went on, and I "got" it. From then on listening to Live at Sine wasn't enough for me, I wanted the album. Smile We all hung out for a while, playing pinball, drinking red wine, gab gab gab. When he was on, he was "on," very funny, and animated. We kept in loose touch. I moved to NY, transferred schools, soon after. I wanted to get my music thing going. I called him, and even though he was getting ready to go out on the road again, he was super sweet about telling me what to do and where to go in NY. I flew to D.C. to see him play the black cat again when everyone else went to woodstock to play in the mud. We had a repeat night at Dantes, he was bummed he had lost his skull and bones necklace, he kept singing Joni Mitchell into my ear, "you and I are always flirting, flirting," he went on and on about how he looked like luke perry and how it annoyed him, and he heard people saying it, and that he was growing his hair out and his stubble to combat it, and at the end of the night gave me an innocent kiss on the lips before he put me in a cab. A kiss on the lips that made my knees weak. It was definitely innocent for him, just friendly, but I thought I would pass out.

I was so blown away by his talent I went to see him play whenever I could. In all I only saw him play five times though. For the third show I found myself backstage at Fez with Jeff, Craig Weidren (of shudder to think), and chris cornell. one of them said something and Jeff said, "id rather masturbate with a seahorse." thats the line that stuck out because it was easy to remember, but he was happier than I had ever seen him that night, and his quick wit in rare form. its fun to see someone in such a great head space, its contagious. The next and last time I spoke with him he was tired from the road, he used to tell me that his voice was only getting stronger on the road, and that night he was saying that he was having some vocal problems, and some major back problems, he had a masseuse at the venue, and was completely exhausted. I saw him again but I was with music biz people that dragged me mid show to another venue. I know that he had many great performances after that but i was in the studio for my own stuff, and never got to speak with him again. i was heartbroken when I got the news. He really was so warm, such a good person, a deep soul, and of course brilliantly talented. I cant help but tear up when I really stop to remember, and feel lucky for the chance to have met him. Not to be dramatic but now that i think about it, ive met a lot of artists since then, none of them can match his spirit. thats the story." -- Jamie Blake

Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run Outtakes

Bruce Springsteen, War And Roses, The Definitive Born To Run Outtakes

I had a real phobia about listening to Springsteen for so long, you draw a picture of what you think someone's all about, and listening to an 'All American Boy' simply grated me something rotten. Thankfully I let my guard down a bit, caved, and found he's not really so bad after all, actually he's rather excellent.

I've got a few of is albums on vinyl now, original pressings, and Born To Run is one of those. Though rather typical in its themes to much other Springsteen music (many of my favourite musicians do exactly the same anyway), chicks and cars, we all know that such things are euphamisms right? Not seen him live, and my old dear turned down a free show recently as she had to work...madness. I do have that gig on here though. Anyway...the files.
